Evaluation

Self initiated brief
For my self initiated brief, i decided to look at how weather effects things, mainly how light looks through different states of water. Whether that be rain and a window pane or frost/ice. at first i struggled with the idea of drawing weather as its not necessarily something you see, but after some research into what i actually like about my sources i.e: choosing words like directions, running down, contrast etc made it easier to create drawings. My favorite technique was use processes where i had little control over the final outcome of the drawing, so things like running paint down a board, fluid painting and ice dyeing fit the bill well.
I mainly work in digital design for prints however i to like to use traditional studio print techniques to create rich and interesting background to print onto.
I wanted to design prints that could be used in block panels similar to Lisa Perrys designs. she uses geometric panels on her garments, so i wanted to experiment with how that would look with a print in those blocks. I think the overall outcome of the fashion illustrations i created inspired by Lisa Perry garment shapes are quite effective and breathe a different life into the design. the work was also contextualize by my trend research - looking at elemental trends for AW16 reflected my theme and sources.
To improve and develop this project further i would try to time manage myself better as i am now getting help with my anxiety, i feel that in future projects this will be easier to cope with thus making it easier for me to complete tasks in the studio and go to group workshops. i would have used the screens for foiling influenced by the work of Tracie Cheng and inspired by imagery of lightning storms.

Live Brief - Old Navy
This was a fun project for me, i decided to focus on the idea of holidays within the given theme of 'american road trips' given to us by Old Navy. so i begen my reserch looking at photos of American 1950s style motels and seaside imagery. i then began to draw these as motifs and after deciding on a colour palette i coloured them in using Photoshop to create these badge/patch looks. this was inspired by research i has seen on WGSN on a soft pop theme and a the use of badges and patches on denim garments. which was then confirmed by me seeing the trend whilst shopping. i would also use these motif to create fun tshirt repeat designs for the girls collections with the intention of these going onto t shirts. although they were designed for girls i feel they could work or womens aswell on casual t shirts and holidays garments. Inspired by working on denim, i began to paint onto denimns and using image maker to apply my 'badges'. the outcome was quite good and my colour palete looked pretty on denim blues. the image maker itself wasnt a great way to apply the badges onto the fabric, howver i was restrained with  time and it seemed the quickest way to gt the idea across onto fabric. They aren't all over prints but placement, i wanted a used messy but fun look for the denim.
If i were to develop this project further i was continue working on denim and maybe set up a few screens to get a precise print of my badge designs and also my repeat designs.

Live Brief: Visualiazations

Below are a few visualizations for the Old Navy life brief. the dungarees and jeans are designed for the women collections and the t shirt and pinafore is for the girls collection, however i feel they could work for all collections.

Self initiated: Final Designs & Illustrations

Below are my final print deisigns and illustrations for my self intitiated project.

Live Brief: Denim Samples

Wanting to work on denim, I decided to recyle about four pairs of old jeans varying in wash and colour.
Inspired by Old Navys used of stripes and slightly influenced by my self intiated brief, I used an old debit card to smooth paint over the denims. I worked in the womenswear collection pallette as these samples were mainly for the womens wear collection but after I had done them I feel they can work equally as well for the girls collection.

To create these is used image maker which as i analysed in my sketchbook didnt work particulary well - nothing as vivd or clear as a screen print, but i beleive was still worth a go to achieve the desired effect in the space of time i had to complete samples. to develop these further i would like to experiemt with holographic foils inspired by the jeans i looked at in my denim research. i like how the colour palleterte works quite compliemtary to the darker wash of this denim. I wuld also use a cheese grater to distress and fray the denim and this has given it a more worn and casual look and is quite on trend at the moment.
With this idea i see it more of a placement print idea on denim garments like dungerees, mom jeans and pinnafores for both women and girls.

Live Brief: Shopping

During a shopping trip i came across proof of an emerging trewnd which i am working on right now and that is the badge/patch idea with fun youthful slogans and logos. mine of course are based on an american road trip but i have also tried to keep them fun and light hearted to reflect the trend i had researched. i found these gaments in Zara and Topshop.

I always find a little exciting when i see similar things being designed when im working on the, I feel it backs up my contect for the design and reasures me of my research.

Personal & Professional Development

The Locating project has enabled me to explore new challenges. The live brief asked of me that I design for two parts of their family. I have understood this as two collections for different markets. for this is decided to design for womenswear - a perhaps obvious and safe choice, but also I ventured into new ground as I decided to also design for girls wear prints. I have not yet designed for different age ranges or even children's designs in my studies so this is new ground for me.
My theme for my self initiated project was weather which is something you cant always 'draw' literally, so I needed to learn how to extract properties and words from my sources and use them to draw with. For me, this is quite new as i have always been used to drawing motifs and working with them, however i am enjoying a more abstract style of drawing and this gives me more scope for textures and richer designs using photoshop.

In my future career I mainly want to focus on digital design for fashion and the fact that this project has enabled me to design for other ages groups (and genders if I wanted to) has help broaden my knowledge of current and future trends in other areas other then just womenswear. it also has helped me broaden my creativity and how i can apply my drawings to other markets. I have also learnt to think outside of the box whilst drawing, thus freeing me to create more interesting drawings and paintings to work from.
This project has also enabled me to work on many projects at once - this being something that may happen to me in my future career. time management is important and this project and course itself helps you learn how to use your time effectively. I may have personal issues with anxiety in using the studios, however I fully understand the need for good time management to achieve good outcomes and results. This time management quality will be needed in the career realm as fashion is so fast in this time we live in.
